Const James Fawcett

Died  11 October 1835, aged 49

Fatally kicked while assisting with arrests during street disturbances.

John Groves

Died  7 March 1886, aged 41


Carlisle City Police


PC Thomas Jardine

Died 30 June 1841

Fatally bludgeoned when dispersing a mob during election disturbances.


RPC Andrew Johnstone

Died 3 July 1915, aged 58

Found drowned  in unknown circumstances after he had been on duty.


PC John W. Wren

Died 20 August 1955, aged 26

Collapsed and died whilst patrolling his beat on night duty.


PC Lyall Law Milton

Died 30 October 1964, aged 34

Found dead by his crashed police motorcycle on traffic patrol at night.


Cumberland and Westmorland Constabulary


PC Joseph Byrnes

Died  29 October 1885, aged 34

Shot and fatally wounded trying to arrest three armed burglars at Plumpton.


PC Arthur Brelsford

Died  April 1952, aged 46

Collapsed and died when he was on point duty directing traffic in Workington.


Cumberland, Westmorland & Carlisle Constabulary


PC George William M. Russell

Died  10 February 1965, aged 36

Shot and fatally wounded when he confronted an armed suspect at Oxenholme.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.


Sgt Clarence Smith

Died 29 June 1968, aged 49

Collapsed and died of heart failure after dealing with a street disturbance.


Cumbria Constabulary


Gordon Stanley Tallontire

Died  26 January 1970, aged 41

Stopped to assist a motorist when struck and killed by a passing van.


PC William Rumney

Died  31 May 1971, aged 29

Fatally injured in a road accident while on motorcycle patrol duty.


PC Isaac Walker Shepherd

Died  24 October 1976, aged 33

Killed in a road accident when struck by a car while on foot patrol.


Sgt William Tyson

Died  19 October 1980, aged 53

Collapsed and died dealing with a disorderly crowd at a disturbance.


PC Keith Easterbrook

Died  3 June 1993, aged 36

Killed assisting in a pursuit when a van struck his police motorcycle.


PC William Arthur Alistair Barker

Died 20 November 2009, aged 44

Killed searching for casualties when a bridge collapsed in severe flooding.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery
and the Royal Humane Society's In Memoriam Testimonial.


PC Nicholas Charles (Nick) Dumphreys

Died 26 January 2020 aged 47

Killed when his police vehicle crashed while responding to an emergency call.
