Steven Alan Hamilton Stimpson

Police Constable

Humberside Police

Died 26 January 1998, aged 33

Killed in a road accident, while on patrol in the early morning, when his traffic patrol car left the road, crashed through a fence and overturned, landing on its roof in a field near Tickton, East Riding of Yorkshire.


Alan West Houghton

Police Constable

Lancashire Constabulary

Died 17 March 1998, aged 50

While on mobile patrol at Pilling on 15 March, he collapsed at the wheel of his police vehicle, which then left the road, collided with a stone wall and overturned; the officer having suffered a cerebral haemorrhage from which he died in hospital two days later.


Samuel Cyril Stewart

Reserve Constable (Retired)

Royal Ulster Constabulary

Died 27 March 1998, aged 52

The former officer, who had retired as a full-time RUC Reserve on health grounds the previous year, was shot dead by terrorist gunmen whilst out shopping with his wife in Armagh.

His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.


Cecil Boyle

Died 25 April 1998, aged 55

Collapsed and died after a struggle to arrest a man at a disturbance in Co. Antrim.


John Anthony Bonelle

Police Constable

West Mercia Constabulary

Died 6 May 1998, aged 34

Killed in a road accident, while taking part in an advanced police motorcycle training course, when he lost control of his machine, careered off the road and crashed, at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.


David Hadyn Hopkins

Police Constable

Died 28 May 1998, aged 41

Fatally injured, while acting as an outrider on a motorcycle escort for a national cycle race, when he was involved in a head-on collision with a car  as he rode ahead of the cyclists on the A449 near Malvern.


Ian Raymond Herbert

Detective Constable

Metropolitan Police

Died 11 June 1998, aged 45

Killed in a road accident, whilst engaged on a training exercise with the Stolen Vehicle Unit of the Organised Crime Group, when his unmarked police car was in collision with a lorry near Sevenoaks in Kent.


James William Yardley

Died 16 June 1998, aged 32

Killed in a road accident while travelling to report for firearms training duty at Lippitts Hill training camp when his motorcycle was in collision with a car.


John Ivers

Died 24 July 1998, aged 41

Fatally injured in a road traffic accident while travelling to duty in Co. Down.


Michael John Brown

Police Constable

Ministry of Defence Police

Died 27 July 1998, aged 34

Killed when he was accidentally thrown into the water, from a rigid inflatable boat, during a training exercise in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland.


James Telford Heaton

Died 2 August 1998, aged 30

Fatally injured when he lost control of his Traffic Patrol car, which left the road and crashed on the A1079 bypass road near Beverley, East Yorkshire, while responding on an emergency call to the scene of a bicycle accident.


Robert Foster

Police Constable

Essex Police

Died 10 August 1998, aged 44

As a force firearms instructor he was taking part in a rifleman's training course with the Lancashire Constabulary, when he collapsed and died of heart failure whilst at the practice site in Yorkshire.


Jonathan Stuart Templeton

Died 7 September 1998, aged 37

Collapsed and died of heart failure while on duty in Hedon Police Station.


Frank Adrian O`Reilly

Constable

Royal Ulster Constabulary

Died 6 October 1998, aged 30 

Died as a result of severe head injuries received on 5 September, when he was struck by shrapnel from a blast bomb thrown into police lines, during loyalist disturbances in the Corcrain Estate following the banning of  the Orange Order's march through Portadown, Co.Armagh.

His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.


Stuart Gordon Ross

Police Constable

Warwickshire Constabulary

Died 10 October 1998, aged 34

Killed while acting as the observer in the East Midlands Air Support Unit helicopter, which crashed shortly after take off when it flew into fog and collided with trees, near its base at Husbands Bosworth, Northamptonshire.


John Boyle

Strathclyde Police

Died 28 October 1998, aged 49

Collapsed and died of heart failure while on late duty at Police Headquarters.
