SC William M. Tilsley

Died 25 December 1842, aged 20

Sworn in to protect his employer from his son who shot him dead.

PC Samuel Kimberlee

Died 12 February 1875, aged 45

Returning from special duty he fell boarding a train and was run over.


PC Isaac Moss

Died 26 June 1875, aged 29

Got into difficulties and drowned searching a river for stolen goods.


PC John Henry Capers

Died 7 June 1879, aged about 23

Fatally injured on duty when struck by a train while crossing the line.


PC William Hine

Died 15 February 1886, aged 29

Found in a canal on his beat having been beaten and stabbed to death.


PC George Buckenham

Died 1 July 1892, aged about 25

Fatally injured in a fall from the van removing him to a new division.


PC Thomas Coleman

Died 27 December 1901, aged 38

Died of blood poisoning contracted while assisting in a post mortem.


PC William Elliott

Died 14 November 1905, aged 22

Accidentally run over by a train at a level crossing while on patrol.


PC Arthur William Howe

Died 25 June 1926, aged 29

Died after amputation of an arm accidentally injured on duty in 1924.

Died 14 December 1928, aged 72

Collapsed and died while attending a police committee meeting.


Sgt Roderick Densulhull Stone

Died 5 March 1930, aged 42

Fatally injured in a road accident cycling to his post late at night.


SC Bertram Holt Cattell

Died 13 August 1940, aged 70

Killed when struck by a car at a traffic check during an air raid.


PWRC John Thomas Gillings

Died 13 August 1940, aged 53

Killed when struck by a car at a traffic check during an air raid.


SC Ernest Hugh Johnson

Died 14 August 1940, aged 47

Killed when struck by a car at a traffic check during an air raid.


SC William Henry Merrick

Died 17 May 1941, aged 36 

PC William John Rowlands

Died 17 May 1941, aged 25

Killed by an explosion extinguishing incendiary bombs during an air raid.


PC Arthur Edward Loosemore

Died 11 January 1946, aged 31

Fatally injured when his motorcycle ran into a stationary lorry at night.

PC Peter Charles Guthrie

Died 22 July 1972, aged 21

Shot dead trying to arrest a suspect who had broken into a gunshop.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.


PC Michael John Bailey

Died 12 November 1973, aged 30

Fatally injured in a road accident responding to an emergency call.

PC Stuart Gordon Ross

Died 10 October 1998, aged 34

Killed while observer in a police helicopter, which crashed taking off.
