Died 12 October 1882, aged 42

Accidentally fell under the Mail Train, which he had met at the railway station.


Portsmouth City Police


PC John Thomas Winn

Died 22 August 1867, aged 29

Killed while on duty when he was thrown from a horse drawn cab.


DC John James Biddlecombe

Died 4 June 1882, aged 42

Died as the result of a broken leg sustained while chasing a suspect.

Died 25 October 1933, aged 27

Killed in a road traffic accident when travelling home from duty at night.


PC Stanley Charles Spooner

Died 11 July 1940, aged 28

Killed by a direct hit from a bomb cycling to his station in an air raid.


SC Walter John Mark Colley

Died 10 January 1941, aged 41

Killed by enemy action in an air raid at Bramble Road School Shelter..


SC Harold White

Died 10 January 1941, aged 33

Killed off duty in an enemy air raid.

Killed by enemy action in an air raid.

SC Bertie Leonard Davis

Died 27 April 1941, aged 38

SC George Edward Hooper 

Died 27 April 1941, aged 56

Both killed by enemy action during an air raid when the First Aid Post was hit.


PWRC Albert Bertram Fleming

Died 14 June 1941, aged 36

Killed as a result of enemy action while on duty during an air raid.

Died 10 January 1941, aged 28

Killed by a bomb explosion while fighting fires during an enemy air raid.

Posthumous King's Commendation for Brave Conduct in Civil Defence.

Died 1 March 1936, aged 51

Fatally injured in a road accident while cycling to the police station.


PC Frederick Ernest Tupper

Died 29 November 1940, aged 41

Fatally injured by a bomb reporting for duty at Headquarters during an air raid.


PWRC Herbert Ivor Symes

Died 30 November 1940, aged 31

Fatally injured during an air raid guarding an electricity sub-station.

Found dead in the morning from heart failure in the street at Andover.

Fatally injured when stopping a runaway horse and trap in Winchester.

Died 1 November 1934, aged 41

Killed when accidentally struck by a van while on bicycle patrol at night.


SC William Arthur Moore

Died 17 September 1939, aged 68

Fatally injured stopping a car at night when hit by another car at Bournemouth.


PC Joseph Clifton

Died 15 March 1940, aged 26

Fatally injured by the explosion of a gas main on patrol at Bournemouth.


PWRC John Styche

Died 13 July 1940, aged 55

Fatally injured in a collision with an A.F.S. car while cycling to duty.

Died 9 January 1942, aged 36

Fatally injured assisting with rescue efforts at the site of a crashed aircraft.

Died 14 January 1950, aged 43

Fatally injured on motorcycle patrol when he fell from his machine.

Died 2 December 1956, aged 36

Accidentally killed while carrying out a road check for a stolen car at Weyhill.


PC Alan Thomas Ralph

Died 14 January 1957, aged 33

Killed in a motorcycle accident en route to headquarters for a course.

PC Martin Lawrence Mennell

Died 9 March 1969, aged 20

Killed when his car was involved in a road accident near Aldershot.

Died 21 June 1975, aged 47

Collapsed and died on duty at Winchester.

Died 14 January 1977, aged 37

Fatally injured in a road accident while on motorcycle patrol at Worthy Down.

Died 17 September 1982, aged 38

PC Paul Salmon

Died 17 September 1982, aged 28

Killed together in a police vehicle crash in pursuit of a suspect car in thick fog.


Sgt Lionel Douglas Hoare

Died 26 August 1983, aged 44

Killed while on mobile patrol when struck head on by another vehicle.

Died 11 February 1984, aged 47

Collapsed and died while on duty as Station Sergeant at Fratton.

Died 7 November 1984, aged 32

Killed in a collision with a car while on motorcycle patrol near Ringwood.


PC Gerald William Spencer

Died 15 May 1985, aged 37

DC Malcolm James Victor Wiltshire

Died 15 May 1985, aged 44

Pilot and observer in an observation aircraft, which crashed during trials.


PC Jeffrey Whitcombe

Died 25 February 1987, aged 37

Collapsed on duty and died in hospital at Lyndhurst.

Died 25 January 1990, aged 51

Killed when a tree hit his car during a storm as he drove to work at Fareham.


PC Colin Cavell

Died 25 March 1992, aged 29

Killed when he lost control of his patrol car while on night duty at Odiham.


WPC Philippa Jane Parish

Died 13 March 1996, aged 29

Killed while observer in a police car which crashed responding to a call.


PC James Alexander Drew

Died 22 January 2009, aged 27

Fatally injured in a road traffic accident while travelling to early duty at Alton.


PC Steven Rawson

Died 3 April 2013, aged 40

Killed when his unmarked police motorcycle was in collision with a car.
